And Now for Something Completely Different: Booze Edition

aka The best drinkYou know, one of the bonuses of owning your own site is that you can post about whatever you want. This week I wanted to take a break from all the video games to talk briefly about something else I’ve been trying out lately. That just so happens to be, cocktails! Over the past months I’ve been learning more about the types of booze out there and trying different brands. After I got my feet wet, so to speak, I ventured into the ever evolving world of the cocktail.

I’m not a barfly, I don’t go out to clubs or even usually order a mixed drink on the rare occasions I go out to eat somewhere nice. So it’s been a completely new experience for me. One where I’m free to explore and try stuff out at home whenever I feel like it. I like to use a different alcohol each week, to experience the subtleties of the liquor when combined with other flavors.

I’ve grown to love Bourbon, it is far and away my spirit of choice. However I quickly learned the quality of bourbon can vastly differ between companies or even batch. While many make some that is relatively palatable and enjoyable, there are a few that make some that is particular awful. As well there are others who can make some that is truly special. For starters I learned through trial and error to avoid certain portions of brands like Jim Beam who’s White Label and  Canadian Club (which technically isn’t a bourbon, but is a Canadian Whiskey), combine poor taste and harsh texture. You quickly will come to realize you get what you pay for. While not all cheaper bourbon is bad, Rebels Yell, Evan Williams, and even certain bottles of Four Roses will give you a decent taste and texture for not that much money. On the higher end you can find some truly special spirits. My personal favorite is Basil Hayden’s Bourbon, a special small batch created by the Jim Beam company. Other brands like Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve, the higher dollar Four Roses, and Elijah Craig are all great choices for a super pleasant bourbon drinking experience.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been putting together a list of cocktails that I want to try. Stuff that sounds good to me that I can mix up one evening to enjoy. It took a bit of research and a side of jimmy rigging, but I’ve finally got the list put together. My requirements were this: Low number of ingredients required. If I can’t pronounce it, I don’t use it. All glasses required be modified to fit one of three: Highball, Lowball, and Cocktail/Gimlet. And last but not least, the “garnish” is always optional (Except for in the Gin/Vodka and Tonic).  These are all Cocktails that others have created, I have slightly modified a few to fit my requirements, you can find the original in the ones that I’ve created a link for their name. At the end I did add one thing that I made myself through trial and error the “Samgria” a low calorie high flavor wonderful wonderful sangria.

My personal favorite is the very first choice, “Bourbon and Coke” a blend of two great tastes that taste great together. A few times you’ll see me list “Mexican Coke” as the cola of choice, I say Mexican Coke because since it’s made with sugar and not HFCS you get a less syrupy and more crisp mouth feel. This is important because when you want to enjoy a high quality cocktail you don’t want to weigh your mouth down with syrup. In a pinch normal coke or any other cola will suffice, but I believe you’ll have the best experience with Mexican Coke.

So! Give them a try. If you want any advice on your foray into the drinking world leave a comment below and I’ll do my best to answer. Or just tell me your favorite way to booze it up. It’s a liquored up new world out there with endless choices to be had! So go out, try your luck, and as always, drink responsibly!

Note: Your manliness level may vary on a drink to drink basis.
